This is a sneak peek of the 3rd Max and Ruben extra, which catches up to them after a few months of dating, and now Max is ready to do something to show Ruben that he likes him too, but his strange behaviour leading up to it leaves Ruben worried!

Ruben’s POV

 “I’ve gone through every conversation, every dinna, every call. I’ve don nothing wrong.”

“But something is wrong,” he states resolutely before he hums, thinking. “Have you considered asking him plainly? I never used to think that worked, but you would be surprised with the results it can yield.”

“Yeah, I have asked him, and every time I do, he says nothing’s wrong. He’s just been busy.”

“That must be a lie,” he deduces without hesitation. “If he were busy, he and Hagen would not talk so much.”

I pause. “He said Hagen needed advice.” 

Nikola’s reply comes after a beat and with quiet care. “I thought Max was seeking advice from Hagen.”

Neither of us speaks as terror arrests us both with the sudden question of who was really on the line here. One thing Max didn’t do was lie, and Hagen didn’t lie to Nikola, ever, but someone wasn’t telling the truth.

It seemed obvious it was my situation that was messed up here, but one thing I learned about Nikola early was that he didn’t take any chances when it came to Hagen.

“I need to go,” Nikola says, and he doesn’t wait for a reply as he hangs up.

A sigh bellows out of me as I toss my phone aside and stare instead at my laptop and all the tasks waiting for me. Working from home was usually a good thing. It was late mornings and long lunches, and recently, it was a day with Max on the other side of my phone line.

We’d work together on these days, talking in between, but okay with the silence when it sprouted. There was nothing better than just having him close, even with the distance. He should’ve been on the line all now, but when I tried to call him this morning, he’d said he was working on something and that we’d talk later.

I check my clock. I’ve got about one hour left in my day, and I haven’t even gotten a text.

Closing my eyes, I breathe in slowly as I try to settle the panic that gathers just beneath my ribs. It does nothing.

I’m so sad for Ruben but little does he know, he’s about to be almost as happy as the day he got to kiss Max for the first time! I love him so much ahhhh
