William’s P.O.V
Peter was in Damon’s arms, hugging him with everything he had, before the front door to Damon’s family home had completely opened.
His smile was big and blinding, the only thing I could make out amongst the long trails of blonde hair that draped over Damon’s shoulder.
Peter’s small arms struggled to connect around Damon’s broad back but he didn’t seem to be deterred by the challenge, only tightening his grip on his brother as he rested his head on Damon’s shoulder.
Light blue eyes rose to me for only a moment but it seemed to be enough to snuff out the happiness there as his smile tucked itself away while he unlatched himself from Damon to step back to the rest of his awaiting family.
“S-Sorry.” He stutters under his breath, his head downcast while he twists his fingers nervously in front of him.
I frown my confusion as Damon glances back at me, taking my hand in his, he tugs me forward until I was next to him, my eyes revealing a saddened smile resting on his lips.
“He’s saying sorry to you,” Damon explains which only amplifies the disorder resting in my head. “Mated wolves don’t like when others get to close to their partners, at least without asking first.”
“Oh,” I reply dully, blinking up at him as I take in the information.
That would explain why I lost my shit every time someone even looked at Damon, but I wasn’t a wolf so that just made me a crazy boyfriend.
“It’s okay Peter,” I say to the sweet boy who was still looking down and avoiding my eyes. “It’s honestly okay, I’m not mad at all, promise.”
Peter peeks up at me through his beautiful mane of hair as if checking for a lie, when he doesn’t find any he only nods a little before looking back down.
I wanted to reassure him that it was truly fine, somehow sensing his pending doubt, but the issue seemed to be solved to the others as they let us inside the house.
“It seemed clear yesterday but I wanted to be sure,” Julian starts as he looks at the pair of us. “He knows about us, what we are and what you two are.”
“Yes,” Damon replies with a hint of pride in his voice that made my stomach do this weird sloshing thing I wanted to stop. “He knows about me, the pack and our world. He knows everything.”
I try to silent the soft, nagging voice in my head that reminded me that I didn’t know about Amelia, so maybe I didn’t know anything.
But that voice was a fucking bastard that would leave me single and crying in my bathtub with a tub of Vanilla ice cream if I listened to it, so I ignored it.
“Everything?” Levi asks with a tone that hinted towards the darker parts to Damon I didn’t want to ever see, not when he seemed to be so terrified by them himself.
“Everything,” Damon repeats, the pride mixing with confidence as he looked back to his family that seemed to be shocked at that little revelation.
“And you’re like, not freaked out at all?” Hagen asks, tilting his head to one side like a dog. “The werewolf thing doesn’t scare you in the slightest?”
“I don’t know really, I haven’t seen much of the ‘wolf’ part of it all but so far it’s okay,” I reply honestly, offering him a shrug when words fail me. “I mean, Damon doesn’t scare me.”
“Damon doesn’t scare you?” He repeats sounding entirely baffled at that one, I shake my head quickly with a growing smile.
“Hagen,” Aiden warns softly but Hagen carries on.
“Like at all?” He asks with clear interest, as if I was some exotic thing he couldn’t begin to comprehend. “Not even a spec? Nada?”
“Nope,” I reply with a small chuckle, squeezing Damon’s hand quickly so he knew it was the truth.
“Damn, that means you really are his mate then.” Hagen breathes out, the comment earning him a quick slap on the head from his father, Aiden. “Ow! It’s a compliment!”
“Sure it was,” Aiden mumbles gruffly as he gives Hagen another light slap that almost had me laughing. “Apologize.”
“I’m sorry Damon and I’m sorry William, it wasn’t meant to be bad, honest,” Hagen says while he rubs at the back of his head, looking up at his father with what I’m sure was a glare.
I glance up a Damon, happy to find a small smile of his own resting on his lips… but his eyes held a sadness as well, one that I could feel running through my veins. I replay the interaction in my head, searching for the cause and settling on it all too quickly.
It made him sad I realized, the thought that his family thought it natural for people to fear him.
The comment wasn’t meant to hurt, I didn’t think it was but it had stung. It hurt Damon and that made me want to just take him back to our little town in the middle of nowhere, where we shared our homes and cooked dinner together most nights.
I just wanted people to stop hurting him.
“It’s okay,” Damon replies before I could argue differently. “Don’t worry about it.”
Hagen beams up at his brother, smiling from ear to ear at the forgiveness he didn’t even know Damon had granted him in these few moments. Damon was quick to forgive but I doubt forgetting came just as fast, but Hagen was happy and that made Damon’s small smile grow because his family meant everything to him.
So I bite back any and all comments that had burned up inside of me, burying them down for now and watch with undeniable amusement as a triumphant Hagen sticks his tongue out at his father. The action only working to earn him a third slap to the head he wasn’t fast enough to see coming.
When the pair settled and all the snickers from the witnesses quieted, the stiff outline of tension and unspoken words spread through the room again.
“Thank you for coming back,” Julian says, breaking the tension before it could grow anymore. “You didn’t have to, but you did so thank you. And we know this is hard… coming here for the both of you, but we are s-so grateful that you’re trying.”
Damon nods gently, not saying anything and I knew it was because he wasn’t able to, not without crumbling once again.
“So today take it all at your own pace. We’ll be around the house, all of us, so you can speak to every one of us when you want to o-or none. Whatever you want.” Julian finishes, offering us a hint of a smile that stuttered as his partner rest a hand of support on his shoulder.
“Thanks.” Damon manages.
“Pick up your phone William. I’ll keep calling until you do. Pick up your phone William I’ll keep calling until you do. William, pick up your phone.”
All eyes focus right on me as Francis’ gruff voice blares loudly from my phone, the sound of his familiar voice making my heart pick up with building excitement.
“He really will,” I say with an apologetic smile as I pull my phone from my pocket and drift from Damon. “I’ll be quick.”
I look to Damon needing to know he’d be okay for even just a bit, his nod eases my worries as I quickly duck off from the entryway of the house and into a random hallway.
“Hey Francis,” I breathe out into the phone as I make my way through the large home, searching for a quiet space. “I can’t really talk right now, is it urgent.”
“Checking up on you? Yes, that is quite urgent, at least to me and I won’t let you go until I know for certain that you’re okay.” Francies replies smoothly, his words and comforting voice working together to bring a true and easy smile to my lips. “How are you?”
“I’m fine,” I reply truthfully because I was. Things weren’t great and more problems seemed to come every day, but I was fine. “How are you?”
“Good, good,” Francis replies methodically, his tone softening from that hard one he often carried with others. “I just wanted to call since last I heard from you, you were making the drive down to go meet this boy’s family.”
“This boy’s name is Damon,” I reply, smile not fading despite his words, as I maneuver through the unfamiliar house. “A name you know since I’ve told you it several times.”
“Until I meet him and see what he’s like for myself, then he will continue to be referred to as ‘the boy’,” Francis replies leaving no room for argument on that point.
My smile only grows along with the warmth it brought to my soul. I slip into a small office space and close the door gently behind me before walking over to the large, floor to ceiling windows.
His words didn’t upset me, not when I knew they were coming from a good place, a place that showed he cared. I could almost imagine it, the face he was probably wearing right now on the other side of the phone, miles away in the place I once called home.
His bushy eyebrows would be close together, as they often were when something ticked him off a bit. They’d be tilted downwards from their inner corners to match the flat line his lips would hold as a show of defiance. His arms would probably be crossed as well, fingers tapping at the elbows as he looked to me.
It was a face that was clear as day now because it was the face he wore since I was a kid, one I’d see when he was disappointed, scolding me or pretending to be upset. It was the face that hinted to me what a father should look like.
“So how is it? The boy and his family?” Francis presses.
I pause unsure of how to even begin to answer that question.
Damon was great, amazing as always… but there was a girl in the picture now. A girl Damon clearly cared for, or used to, a girl where I was a guy and Damon wasn’t into guys, none before me at least.
I wanted to ignore the situation, put it to bed just like I told Damon to do. I didn’t want to press it, to press him when I was still holding so much back from him. It wasn’t fair, especially with all he was going through now, he didn’t need that from me. But I couldn’t stop my mind from swirling, wondering what was so bad that Damon chose to keep it to himself. Chose to keep that part of him away, over admitting to hurting others.
It scared me to think of what it may be.
Then there was Damon’s family and all that came with it. They all seemed very nice so far, but my family also looked sweet and loving when people came around, I had to be cautious around them. But even so, I couldn’t imagine it all being an act, it seemed to genuine to be just a show for me. Still, it was hard to put the ones that hurt Damon with the ones that held him tight while he cried.
It was confusing, all of it. It was just fucking confusing.
“William?” Francis calls with evident worry in his tone when I don’t reply. “What’s wrong?”
“Nothing,” I reply running a tired hand over my face. “Nothing’s wrong, everything’s fine. I’m fine.”
I was trying to be fine because that was the best thing I could do for me and for Damon.
“You don’t sound fine,” Francis replies honestly making me laugh.
“Well, I am.”
“Are you sure everything is okay up there?” He asks once more, suspicions weighing his words down.
“Yeah, they are,” I reply as I look outside the window at the bristling trees, wanting to distract myself even for only a moment. “Well, as good as they can be.”
“I still don’t feel comfortable having you in a house full of people we don’t know,” Francis replies, speaking to fears of mine that would steer me away if it wasn’t for Damon. “I can take some vacation days to come to you, not their house but somewhere close so you’ll have me if you need me.”
“That’s really nice of you Francis, I appreciate the offer, I really do, but I’m okay,” I assure him, my smile only growing with the knowledge that he’d actually do it… for me. “I promise, I’m fine and if I was not, you’d be the first to know about it. So why don’t you save those vacation days for your family?”
“You just let me know if you need me and I’ll be there.” He replies instead, the slight tremor buried in his voice showing his worry. “A call or text and I’ll come.”
“Thank you,” I reply, focusing on not letting my smile begin to wobble because I wouldn’t be able to stop the tears if I did, tears of delight. “Thanks, Francis.”
“Anytime,” He answers, the smile on his lips an audible one.
I glance over my shoulder at the sound of the door opening behind me, relaxing when Damon comes into view, moving slowly to me with worry and questions brimming in his eyes. I offer him my hand and he takes it quickly, letting me pull him to me so I could rest my head to his chest and sink into the feel of him. He presses a gentle kiss to the top of my head while his arms circle me immediately, drowning me with love and warmth that had me sighing my pleasure.
“Thanks for checking up on me Francis, I really do appreciate it and you,” I say into the phone, eyes following the blurred, green lines that were rooted outside the house. “I’ll be the one to call next time.”
“I’ll be holding you to that so you better.” He teases with a light laugh. “Take care, William.”
When he hangs up, I pull back from Damon’s arms, turning quickly to look up at him as I slip the phone back into its rightful place in my back pocket.
I couldn’t help the laugh that escaped my lips at the sight of his pout that always came out when Francis called, it wasn’t jealousy but the disappointment that he still hadn’t managed to acquire Francis’ approval.
“He’s just protective,” I assure him as I did every time I hung up from a call with Francis.
Damon knew that Francis worked for the family, knew that I’d known him for most of my life and that he meant a lot to me, that I cared for him more than I did my own family. Knowing that and that Francis wasn’t his biggest fan, left Damon like a pup pinning for a comforting belly rub.
“He’ll meet you one day and see how good you are to me, then he’ll love you,” I promise, speaking it into fruition because I needed that to happen.
“And if he ends up hating me?” Damon queries as he runs a hand through my hair, clearing the fallen strands from my face.
“Then I guess I’ll have to find a new boyfriend,” I reply with a shrug.
Damon’s hand freezes in my hair as his mouth falls open at my words, a look of pure terror and unadulterated horror flashing across his face and settling there as his features drop.
“I’m joking Damon,” I say quickly when I realize he didn’t hear the teasing tone in my voice. “It was just a joke, promise.”
Stepping up onto the ends of my toes, I press a kiss to Damon’s lips until he relaxes into me. I soothe my hand over his chest, feeling at his thumping heart that was slowly settling down from its panicked state.
“You take things too seriously.” I tease against his lips.
“You make bad jokes.” Damon shoots back making me laugh as my heart soars with joy.
“You love me and my awesome jokes.” I correct making him smile as he takes my lips in another kiss.
His body pressing mine against the glass, only working to steer up feelings I had no right feeling in his family’s home. I push Damon back gently, not stopping until our bodies were parted and so were our lips, the distance pulling an adorable whine from Damon’s lips.
“I am not getting hard in your dads’ office,” I say seriously, smirking at the look of disappointment in his eyes. “We are going to go back to your family, spend the day with them in a respectable and tame manner and if you’re good…”
I wrap my fingers around Damon’s neck as I step up to him, brushing my lips against his ears.
“….if you’re good…. then later when we’re back to our little hideaway… we’ll go to our bedroom and I’ll lay you down on the bed and in bed… in bed I’m going to make you cum again and again…. and again.”
I run my tongue along the shell of his ear while scratching at the nape of his neck eliciting a quiet groan from him as he shivered against me, his hard, firm body meeting mine again.
Laughing gently, I slip away from him and make my way back to where we’d left the rest of his family. Glancing over my shoulder, I crook my finger at my mate and Damon doesn’t hesitate to follow.
————————–
“You’re gay.”
My eyes drift across to Hagen who was somehow still struggling to wrap his head around the fact that his brother was dating another man.
His brown eyes were open wide, moving frantically between Damon and me as he stared at the two of us, his black curls covering most of his forehead to make his eyes appear to pop out even more. It was hard for me not to smile a little at the blatant disbelief that was dripping from his tone.
So far, Hagen was living up to Damon’s descriptions of him perfectly.
We were currently sitting on the floor of the twin’s bedroom, or Damon and I were. The twins were perched on the edge of one of their beds, working together to thoroughly entertain me as they through disses and backhanded remarks at one another.
“I’m not gay,” Damon replies quickly pulling a helpless snort of amusement from me. When he casts a look of surprise my way, I tilt my head and raise one of my brows in challenge.
“You are aware that I am a man right?” I ask holding his stare. “And that we are in a relationship?”
“Yes, but I’m not gay,” Damon explains gently as if delivering the news to a bear. “It’s only you, no other man, or woman to be clear. Just you.”
Despite the stupid smile that wanted to make its way onto my lips, I was ready to argue against his logic into the grave but Hagen spoke up again.
“You’re gay.” He repeats, his lips parted as he sat there, obviously shellshocked.
“Clearly Hagen.” His sister, Josey, repeats with a clipped tone.
“Damon isn’t gay…. h-he’s Damon!” He exclaims as if that reasoning alone should combat the fact that I, a man, was his mate.
“Hagen you’re not homophobic so what’s the problem?” Damon asks sounding almost bored as he looked at his little brother.
“If you’re gay…. then fuck dude…” Hagen mumbles as he runs a hand down his face and covers his mouth looking genuinely terrified from what I could make out of his expression. “If it’s in the fucking blood… I just…. if this shit is genetic, then I am so fucked…”
I can’t help the chuckle that escapes me, the terror that he was building at even the prospect of being with another man was truly amusing. I mean, I guess it was an understandable fear from his side as another one of his siblings came to love the taste of the rainbow flag.
“Oh,” Josey says as she looks to her brother with a wide grin. “You’re not thinking about Damon, no… you’re thinking about how your ass is grass. You right, you’re so fucked, literally.”
I laugh alongside the young girl, my immature side taking a liking to the pun. Out of all Damon’s siblings, I suspected I’d get along best with Josey. Her mouth of fire something I found both thoroughly amusing as well as impressive, a tool she seemed to have mastered to survive in this house of testosterone.
“Ha,” Damon says leaning back onto his arms as he stretched out on the fluffy rug. “If that’s what you’re worried about, then I don’t blame you man. I didn’t think it was possible but they got me, prepare yourself.”
“I need to leave the country,” Hagen whispers as he raises a trembling hand to his lips.
“Like he won’t find you even if you go to another realm,” Josey replies with a taunting laugh.
I frown at this, the thread I was following coming up short with this as I realize there was a piece of this I was missing.
“There’s a warlock in the pack, a little kid who’s in love with Hagen,” Damon explains, answering my questions before I could even ask them. “It’s been like that since day one, but Hagen’s not interested.”
“Because I’m straight.” Hagen snaps back as if saying it would seal it so.
“So was Damon, now look at him.” Josey shoots back, her amusement only feeding my own.
“Well I am and it’s not love, he’s creepy,” Hagen replies before shooting a glare to the wardrobe mirror. I look to it and back at him, frowning in confusion when nothing changes. “It’s never happening.”
“I’ll put fifty on you guys having your first kid after two years of being together,” Josey says, ignoring her brother’s declaration as she looks me, preparing for a bet.
She didn’t look at Damon I noticed, not really. She directed her comments, the few that came, at me or Hagen, but never Damon.
“One hundred says he’ll break before they even touch eighteen,” Damon replies despite Josey.
“Done.” She confirms, still not looking at him.
“I hate you both,” Hagen grumbles as he sags in his chair.
“Can I speak to you for a minute Jo?” Damon asks seeming to be now tired of this conversation about Hagen and his impending doom.
“I guess,” Josey replies as she slides off the bed and walks away.
“Are you okay with staying here with Hagen?” Damon asks me as he pulls himself to his feet. “I want to talk to her alone.”
I look to Hagen, his picture wasn’t clear but he was now laying on the bed with his head over the edge and a small cry riding his chest.
“Yeah, I think I’m safe.” I tease making him laugh before he follows after his sister leaving me and Hagen alone.
“Do you want to talk about it?” I offer not sure what else could be said.
“It’s nothing special.” He replies as his eyes focus on me. “He’s into me and the feeling is nowhere near mutual.”
“You’ve told him this?” I question and apparently that wasn’t the right question to ask because Hagen just about exploded at this.
“I’ve more than told him that it’s not mutual.” He begins with a huff as he sits up in a rush. “I have said it a thousand times over, back to front and left to right. I’ve even told him in Mandarin! Does the fucker give a damn? No! No, he does not! In his head, we are mates and I’m in denial!”
“Wait, you speak Mandarin?” I question, my stupid brain zooming in on that piece over everything else.
“Peter and I have been taking lessons on it for about a year now but that’s not the point!” Hagen scolds making me laugh.
“Sorry, continue with the point.”
“The point is I’m not interested and he doesn’t know how to take no for answer.” Hagen continues before sliding from the bed and to the floor with a loud thump. “Recently things have been better since Aunty Kat got him off my back, he’s not nearly as bad as he was before. But I think when he hears about you and Damon, if he hasn’t already, it’ll just relight any hope I managed to snuffle out.”
“I could speak to him if you’d like?” I offer before freezing at my own words, chaos erupting in my mind as we try to figure out where the hell that one came from.
I didn’t know this kid or Hagen, I had no business trying to fix whatever mess was going on there. My only job was helping Damon and holding my own shit together, a job that I was already struggling with, adding anyone else onto the list was suicide.
Yet the words had come out so easily, slipping past my lips as smooth as silk, some part of me wanting to help not only Hagen but this other kid I didn’t even know the name of.
This place was making me weirder than usual.
“I doubt it’d do anything but you could try if you want,” Hagen says dismissively, but then he was tilting his head to the side and staring at me. “Or maybe it would…”
“I’m lost,” I say honestly.
“You feel like a Luna,” He says only servicing to make the problem worse. “I’ve only met one before when dad took me to another pack for an Awakening, but you feel just like she did.”
“Thank you?” I reply not knowing if it was a compliment or not.
“Your welcome,” Hagen says with a big smile. “Now let’s go raid the kitchen, I’m hungry.”
Hagen stands before reaching down to pull me up with him.
I try to push away but I couldn’t move away in time, his fingers wrapped around mine before I could tell him no and I froze as a blanket of panic suffocated me instantly.
My voice sticks in my throat despite the raw ache in my chest to scream for help, to scream for him to stop, to scream for Damon and then sickness came tumbling out.
This is what you deserve.
