Chapter 44

Hagen’s P.O.V

I have one priority.
One sole, unshakable priority to find my mate, and the moment it becomes fixed in my mind, I chase after it like a madman.

My body aches, and my stomach growls, but I ignore them both as I move quickly behind Josey while Levi and Damon do their part of distracting our parents. If they didnโ€™t try to stop me from leaving, theyโ€™d want to come with me, and I didnโ€™t need them hovering.

I needed to find Nikola. Iโ€™d already wasted too much time as it was.

The afternoon sun is high and bright, making us sweat as we race through the packlands. I move as fast as I can, forcing Josey to jog at my side. She watches me like a hawk, making sure I make it without fainting, but my body aches for Nikola more than it does rest.

We keep moving, weaving through familiar paths, ignoring any attention paid our way with only one destination in mind.

The Stone House.

I had to start my search with Jacob because odds were, even if Nikola hadnโ€™t told him where he was, the powerful warlock mightโ€™ve figured it out for himself, and while Jacob and I didnโ€™t really have a relationship beyond being โ€˜kind ofโ€™ cousins, he loved helping others.

โ€œFuck you, Hagen!โ€

Wide-eyed, I gape as Jacob flips me off before he slams his front door in my face. It makes me jolt and blink for the first time as I watch the heavy door rattle before tendrils of dark magic race up its sides.

โ€ฆI didnโ€™t think Jacob even knew how to do that โ€” Zyair whispers as if speaking might bring Jacob back out.

Stunned and a little embarrassed, I stand dumbly in my spot for a while before I feel Josey fill the space at my side.

โ€œWell,โ€ she breathes, โ€œJacobโ€™s definitely not going to help us.โ€

โ€œNo,โ€ I agree before I step back from the house by her guidance.

As we walk away from the home on the edge of pack lands, I try not to get disheartened by only the first setback. This wasnโ€™t going to be easy, I knew that. But still, seeing Jacobโ€™s blatant anger left me trekking in a slight daze.

โ€œHey, itโ€™s okay,โ€ Josey says, giving my shoulder a slight nudge. โ€œHeโ€™s angry, it wonโ€™t last forever.โ€

โ€œIt might,โ€ I reply as I try not to cower to the fear that tries to sprout inside of me. โ€œThat was Jacob. Jacob, who only hates rainy days more than he hates cursing,โ€ and heโ€™d just told me to โ€˜fuck offโ€™ in more than one way.

If that was Jacobโ€™s reaction to seeing me, then finding Nikola wasnโ€™t just going to be โ€˜not easyโ€™. It was going to be hell.

Iโ€™d survive it though. For monthsโ€” years, Nikola had burned through his own hells for me, and if I wanted him, I could do the same.

I shake off the dread and steady my steps as I head towards the home of Nikolaโ€™s second closest friend.

Willowโ€™s family home is an easy one to find, given the fact that both she and her father are humans, and those scents in a pack full of wolves are naturally distinct.

I only have to knock once before thereโ€™s an answering shout and shuffling follows inside. When the door opens, itโ€™s Willow on the other side, but Iโ€™m almost mournful of that fact when rage explodes behind her eyes a moment before she shuts them and takes a deep, measured breath.

โ€œI know youโ€™re not here right now,โ€the human cackles manically as she lifts her shaking palms. โ€œI know youโ€™re not standing at my front door.โ€

I retreat, making any trace of me in her vicinity non-existent before she can open her eyes and unleash that rage onto me.

โ€œWell, fuck,โ€ Josey breathes again as she joins my side.

Well, fuck was right.

Nikolaโ€™s friends were pissed, and rightfully so, and theyโ€™d be no help, but I wouldโ€™ve withstood their rage in pursuit of an answer if I thought they knew where Nik was, but they didnโ€™t.

I could tell by their sheer fury that they werenโ€™t just upset at me for wrecking the relationship between Nik and me and hurting him in the process, but for taking him from them too, which meant they didnโ€™t know where he was.

Zyair whines as he paces fretfully, wanting out so he can put his nose to the ground and find our mate that way, but it wouldnโ€™t work. For all we knew, Nikola could be light years away on one of the amazing planets he discovered, or hidden behind several spells right in front of us.

The only way to find him was with magic, which left only one more place to try in this packโ€” The Amorenia Household.

In my mind, memories play out live before me as I walk along the very path unblemished versions of Nik and I had walked down before. I shake those burning images away as I force myself to keep moving.

The path is like the rest of the outer ones in the pack, made of dirt and stone, but it feels like weโ€™re trekking through quicksand now for some reason. At first I think itโ€™s just me, but then I spot the way Joseyโ€™s panting beside me, and I know itโ€™s something else.

Itโ€™s like thereโ€™s a real, looming force settled over every inch of the lands the Amorenias inhabit, and each step closer to the centre drives their warding magic deeper beneath your bones.

Whatโ€™s stranger still is how the weight of their absence trumps the might of their magic when they are here. Itโ€™s like a gaping wound in the pack; the closer you get to it, the more you smell its stench.

Theyโ€™re not hereโ€” I know that, but itโ€™s the best place to find some sort of hint as to where they might be because wherever Nikola was, his parents likely were too.

It was a long shot, but I was hoping that theyโ€™d left something behind, or maybe I could figure out a spell if a grimoire were present. Iโ€™d spent enough time with Nikola to know how to unwind a spellโ€™s inner workings if you could find its start point.

Hopes and maybes. I was banking on a shot in the dark whilst simultaneously fearing what would happen if the light was smothered out, because Dad had been right when heโ€™d said that the only thing more terrifying than not looking for him, was doing so and still not finding him.

If I couldnโ€™t find Nikola, then the pain that would follow would top what Iโ€™d been feeling since Iโ€™d lost him. But it wouldnโ€™t stop me.

Iโ€™d keep looking for Nikola until the day I died if I had to, because there was no life for me without him.

โ€œThe fuck?โ€

I glance back at Josey who slams her palms against some invisible barrier that stops her, but not me. She kicks and shoves but doesnโ€™t move an inch beyond her last, while I move freely ahead of her.

โ€œYouโ€™re locked out,โ€ I say with a frown. โ€œBut Iโ€™m not.โ€

I couldnโ€™t imagine why. Surely, any fondness the Amorenias used to feel for me had been wiped out.

She nods with a sigh, โ€œYou go ahead then. Iโ€™ll wait here.โ€

I nod and carry on quickly to the house I could already spot. I trudge through the sickly feeling that grows the closer I get, with the one distinct goal of finding something that would lead me to my mate.

I would, because I had to. It was as simple as that. It had to be.

I still didnโ€™t know what Iโ€™d say when I saw him. Every time I let myself imagine actually seeing Nikola again, my heart hammered with both fear and longing. Still, beyond a lifetimeโ€™s supply of apologies, I didnโ€™t know what Iโ€™d say, but I planned to worry about that when I found him.

First, I had to find him, and I would, because living without Nikola wasnโ€™t an option anymore.

Carefully, I climb the creaking steps of the home Iโ€™d known all my life and stare at the front mat. Its warding message usually made me smile, but it only spurs an ominous feeling now, especially when I glance at the window showing the playful sign half-fallen.

I swallow around the lump in my throat as I wrap a hand around the doorknob and push it open.

Despite the residentsโ€™ declarations of hating visitors, it was always open. Iโ€™d always found that strange but as I thought about the barrier keeping Josey out now, I couldnโ€™t help but wonder if maybe all this time, the doors had always been open to me alone.

The scents that greet me make my chest burn with scorching longing as I carefully inch my way inside, barely placing any weight as I go.

Base instincts rattle inside me, demanding I retreat because it feels like Iโ€™m intruding on some dangerous creature or engaging in some sick invasion of a space I did not belong inโ€” one that equally didnโ€™t want me inside of it, but I had to do something, so I keep moving.

The house is disturbingly quiet, to the point that the hairs on my arms and at the back of my neck stand at attention. I didnโ€™t think the house had many faulty floorboards, but I seem to step on each one as I make my way inside the hallowed home.

At the intersection between the stairwell and the hall, I glance up briefly before turning away, heading for the atheneum.

I couldnโ€™t go to his room. That would be too much.

His scent, his thingsโ€” him. No matter how desperate I was for even a dated taste of him,I couldnโ€™t handle that right now, so the atheneum it is.

The familiar room is as grand and endless as it always was, stacked full of grimoires that are made to be spiralling walls. I walk through them, looking for the centre region they used as a lounge, the one Iโ€™m hoping is left with some book orโ€ฆ somethingโ€ฆ only it feels like an endless maze meant to kill me without them guiding me.

Nevertheless, I keep walking, endlessly searching and eventually, I do find the centre, and there is something there, or rather, someone.

Aunty Kat swivels at the sound of my sneakers squeaking to a stop against her marble floors, and her purple eyes grow wide at the sight of me. Thereโ€™s a large messenger bag strapped over her shoulder and it turns with her, moving so quickly that one of the books sheโ€™s shoving inside almost slips out. But it doesnโ€™t, not that she notices.

Her gaze never shifts from me, the intruder, which at first seems to surprise her before it registers, and then, it only enrages her.

โ€œYouโ€™re here,โ€ she sneers the words like they make her sick, and my instincts immediately make me take a step back. โ€œYouโ€™re actually here? In our home?!โ€

Each word comes louder as she stands taller, seeming to grow in size with fury alone. Her eyes narrow and one twitches, and everything inside of me says, run.

It wasnโ€™t that Iโ€™d never seen Aunty Kat mad. I had. Iโ€™d just never seen her this mad.

โ€œNo!โ€ She booms, and in a moment, cold magic brutally seizes me and tears me out of her home.

I tumble out onto the front lawn of the house before I manage to catch my footing, and when I do, sheโ€™s stood in front of me with those fiery purple eyes fixed on me. Sporadic tendrils of magic were sprouting from her, making the tips of her hair curl upwards.

โ€œHow did you even get in?โ€ She snaps, looking behind me and down toward the path where Josey waits. Her expression twists with confusion before it clears suddenly and she chokes out a laugh. โ€œOf course. Itโ€™s my own damn fault. Itโ€™s all my fault.โ€

I donโ€™t understand what she means but I force myself to stand, and then to meet her cruel gaze.

I swallow before I speak. โ€œI-I know I have no right, butโ€”โ€

โ€œThereโ€™s no but, Hagen,โ€ she grinds out, her voice like nails on a chalkboard. โ€œThereโ€™s no โ€˜butโ€™ to add to the end of that sentence. You have no right! None! Thatโ€™s it. You have used and abused my sonโ€™s love for you for too long, and you have no rightโ€” you never did.โ€

โ€œI know,โ€ I croak as my heart spasms inside my chest. Shame tries to wrap a leash around it until it stops beating, but hope and fear force it to beat anyway because this is it.

This was it. This was my chance to find Nik and I had to get to him.

โ€œI know I donโ€™t, and Iโ€™m sorry. I-Iโ€™m so sorry. Iโ€™ve been horrible, butโ€”โ€

โ€œI said no but!โ€

Unbridled anger lashes out at me and the space around me, forcing me back several steps as it slams the grass blades flat on their sides. I choke against the raw power that makes the blood in my veins quiver for an escape.

In my mind, I picture Nikolaโ€” happy, sad, hurt, and then angry, and I focus on that last image of him as I force down the urge to wince.

โ€œYou always have an excuse. Ever since you were young, youโ€™ve always had an excuse,โ€ she whispers tightly, staring down at me from over her nose like Iโ€™m a bug sheโ€™s contemplating smushing beneath her boot. โ€œYou were the victim, and let me tell you, Hagen. You play it well.โ€ She shakes her head as her magic rises strong, โ€œI believed you over him so muchโ€” your pain over his. The fault fell on Nikki, every time. Every. Single. Time. I thought he just needed to learn to control himself, to have patience, but no amount of patience or effort was good enough for you.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m sorry,โ€ I croak desperately. โ€œIโ€™m so sorry. I know th-that I fucked up, a lot. I-I always thought it was himโ€”โ€ she scoffs, fists clenching at her side. โ€œI know better now!โ€

โ€œNow,โ€ she mocks. โ€œAfter eighteen fucking years, now you know better?!?โ€

Her words are like lashes, ones that lay over the wounds of Nikolaโ€™s parting ones to me. Ones that had said the same thing, of how long heโ€™d waited, trying, begging me to love him as he loved me.

I wanted to take my time. I wasnโ€™t ready. That hadnโ€™t ever been a lie, but maybe I wouldโ€™ve been if Iโ€™d been fighting for Nikolaโ€™s forgiveness the same way heโ€™d been fighting for mine since the beginning.

I shake my head, wanting to turn back time and start again, but that wasnโ€™t possible and it was too easy, and thisโ€ฆ this was hell, and hell was worse.

โ€œI can do better,โ€ I sob because theyโ€™re tears in my eyes. Fresh ones that arenโ€™t only for Nik and I, but Aunty Kat too. โ€œI-I want to do better.โ€

โ€œDidnโ€™t you want to do better last year? After his birthday?โ€ She asks her voice laced with her venom. โ€œDidnโ€™t you want to give him a chance?โ€

โ€œIโ€”โ€ I gape.

โ€œYouโ€™ve never given him a chance!โ€ She yells, and in her purple, hateful eyes, I spot the way they glimmer, the way they shine with unshed tears. โ€œHe never stood a chance with you. Never. Youโ€™ve just taken, and taken, and consumed him whole, and now, you want to get whatโ€™s left too. I wonโ€™t let you.โ€

My heart drops, real fear pumping inside of it at the threat behind those last words.

โ€œNo. Please,โ€ I croak, shaking my head. โ€œI-Iโ€™ll make it b-better. I-I made a mistake! A-A-A big mistake and Iโ€™ll pay for it for the rest of my life. Iโ€™ll spend the rest of my life trying to make it up to him, trying to make it all up to him. I just need a chanceโ€”โ€

Those are the wrong words, though I donโ€™t think any right words exist in the face of so much anger and hatred, but thoseโ€ฆ those are the wrong ones.

โ€œNo,โ€ she booms, almost shrieking, cutting me off as her magic pushes me back, forcing me to retreat away from her, from the house, and any chance of finding Nik. โ€œNo more chances!โ€

โ€œPleaseโ€”โ€

โ€œYouโ€™ll get nothing from me. Never again, Hagen,โ€ she vows as I skid back, dragged away by the claws of her magic that arenโ€™t gentle with their grip. โ€œโ€ฆYouโ€™re lucky youโ€™re still breathing.โ€

When I skid past the barrier, I finally notice the true depths of its looming presence because it slams shut behind me, standing tall like an impenetrable wall. Behind it, Josey grabs my arms, steadying me, but itโ€™s not just Josey and me whoโ€™re out here now.

โ€œKat,โ€ Dad says, his voice hard yet imploring as he steps up to the wall between us and the witch standing on the other side whoโ€™d never looked so hatefully at the lot of us. โ€œKaterina, please.โ€

โ€œYou get nothing either, Julian!โ€ She snaps as her magic gathers, lashing out at everything around us until thereโ€™s a quiet storm brewing overhead, like the heat I can feel budding beneath the earth. โ€œNone of you deserve anything from me.โ€

โ€œKat, heโ€™ll make it right,โ€ Dad tries, and I can hear the heartbreak in his voice because the hate spewing from Aunty Kat isnโ€™t just for me, but for him too. โ€œHeโ€™llโ€”โ€

โ€œHe had his chance! He had years of chances and all heโ€™s ever done is tear Nikola down, and you let him!โ€ She booms, her voice crackling like lightning. โ€œYou let him get away with it, again and again, and made me do the same!โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s not fair!โ€ Dad shouts back, a sliver of the former alpha seeping through. โ€œNikola did bad thingsโ€” horrible things!โ€

โ€œAnd when he apologised and tried to do better, you all crucified him for it and refused to forgive him! No matter how many times he apologised!โ€ She shoots back, and finally, her tears slip free. They slide down, but itโ€™s almost like they donโ€™t belong to her, because they have absolutely no effect on her loathsome expression. โ€œโ€ฆWe shouldโ€™ve left.โ€

Itโ€™s no longer about me, nor me and Nikola. Itโ€™s about them and the years of pain and sacrifices theyโ€™d made for each other; for us.

Thatโ€™s why the pain and cruelty that those words unleash in me is nothing compared to the agony I feel overwhelm the depths of my fatherโ€™s very being.

โ€œโ€ฆKaterina,โ€ this time, he says her name mournfully.

โ€œWe. Shouldโ€™ve. Left,โ€ she repeats, slower and harder to ensure he felt each word. โ€œI knew that, but this was my home, you were my friends, and you begged. Do you remember? โ€˜Kat, please. Heโ€™s barely speaking to usโ€™. Never mind the fact that Nik was alright, because why should he matter? He wasnโ€™t yours, and youโ€™ve only ever cared about yours.โ€

โ€œKat,โ€ Itโ€™s a plea this time.

โ€œI cared about mine and yours. Because we were friends, because we were family,โ€ she grinds out as more tears ripple through and the earth beneath her feet cracks and blackens, webbing out like a missile programmed to destroy. โ€œI cared, so we came back. I shouldnโ€™t haveโ€ฆ I shouldโ€™ve taken my son and ran like hell so he couldโ€™ve had a life away from yours.โ€

On this side of the barrier, thereโ€™s only pain. An unrelenting amount of it that rattles through our family bond, through each of us, and leaves us mutely staring up at the source of it, the source none of us could manage to refute.

In our silence, Aunty Katty drops her gaze back down to me and I donโ€™t dare breathe as her lip curls with near disgust.

โ€œIโ€™m running now because, for the first time in his life, Nikola wants nothing to do with you,โ€ she says plainly. Itโ€™s not meant to hurt. She doesnโ€™t have to try because itโ€™s just the truth, but the truth hurts well enough for Zyair to howl his pain. โ€œIโ€™m not keeping him away; he doesnโ€™t want to be with you, so if you think, for a second, that Iโ€™m going to mess that up, youโ€™re even more selfish than I know you are.โ€

Itโ€™s not important. Focus on finding him. I close my eyes while I try to block out her words.

I could deal with the wounds they opened when I found Nik and fixed things, but not before.

Find him, thatโ€™s all that matters.

โ€œI wonโ€™t let you hurt him again.โ€

My eyes open and meet hers, and in them, I see the resolve in her eyes and know in a heartbeat what she really means.

โ€œNo!โ€ I push out of Joseyโ€™s arms, racing forward only to meet the barrier. โ€œPlease, n-no. donโ€™t!โ€

But then she leaves, without a word, without a response. She just leaves, disappearing from the pack and our lives, and takes with her the little hope Iโ€™d kindled for myself, leaving nothing behind but gaping terror.

I canโ€™t breathe. I canโ€™t shuffle air into my lungs with that threat hanging over my head.

That was meant to hurtโ€” to inflict fearโ€” and it did.

โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”

I pace the four steps in front of me insistently because I have to.

I have to move, to do something, and since I have no idea where I should be moving to get to my mate, this is where I move.

My family watches me, but nobody says a word; nobody has said a word since Josey relayed what happened with Aunty Kat.

Our household wasnโ€™t a quiet one.

For as long as I could remember, someone was always yelling or laughing, screaming or crying. It didnโ€™t matter how many of us were here, silence didnโ€™t happen.

Weโ€™re silent now, seated in the living room, all of us except Peter.

Theyโ€™d all felt her rage through the pack, but to learn the reason why had left Levi and Damon mostly shocked, while the Old Man looked just as hurt as Dad, who heโ€™d been holding since heโ€™d returned home, head cast down.

I felt as horrible for Dad as I did for myself, but I was wasting time pacing here when I needed to be out looking for Nik.

Aunty Kat hadnโ€™t said it outright, but something about her last statement made it seem like she was working on a way to keep Nikola and me apart for good, and that made the already dwindling time frame an even smaller one.

โ€œMekhi,โ€ I say, looking at Damon. โ€œHe can help, right?โ€

Damon winces, his blue eyes mournful. โ€œI asked before I even saw you and he was hesitant then. After feeling her anger today, thereโ€™s no way.โ€

โ€œItโ€™ll be the same for all witches,โ€ Josey adds with a sigh. โ€œDamon might be their alpha, but no smart witch would risk directing that rage on themselves.โ€

โ€œAnd I wouldnโ€™t ask them to,โ€ Damon adds the moment my lips part. โ€œThatโ€™s not fair.โ€

I didnโ€™t care what was fair. I just wanted Nik.

Silence falls over the lot of us again, and its haunting in a way that makes me want to crawl out of my own skin.

Four steps. I pace and pace, a moment away from letting Zyair out so at least weโ€™d be doing something his way.

โ€œWhat are you going to do?โ€ Leviโ€™s the one brave enough to speak again, and he looks at me when he asks his questions. โ€œYouโ€™re not just going to give up, are you?โ€

โ€œNo,โ€ I dismiss quickly. That wasnโ€™t even an option. โ€œIโ€™m going to look for him, outside the pack. I justโ€ฆ I donโ€™t know where to start.โ€

Itโ€™s humiliating to admit it aloud, but that embarrassment is nothing compared to the shame I feel inside.

How could I not know where my mate would go?

I knew Nik. I knew that his favourite colour was hot pink, that he liked starting his days with yoga, that if you gave him a bowl of grapes, heโ€™d eat the green and not the others, and that he had to take five deep breaths through his nose before he allowed himself to fall asleep at night.

I knew him, all these little, ridiculous things about him, and yet, I didnโ€™t have the faintest clue where he could be now. I didnโ€™t even know where to begin.

โ€œI have an idea,โ€ Dad says, sounding like himself but his eyes remain fixed on the floor as he speaks. โ€œOf where heโ€” they, might be.โ€

I come to a stop while the others sit up, ready to get a move on the minute he gives me something to work with. But Dad first shares a look with Pops, and when they both seem to decide on something, Pops is the one who speaks.

โ€œWhat do you all know about the vampires?โ€

Itโ€™s the last thing I expect him to say. Itโ€™s so out of the blue that I think I havenโ€™t heard him right, but his expression is nothing but serious as he looks at me.

โ€œThe vampires?โ€ I echo carefully.

โ€œSmall species, but growing quickly,โ€ Damon answers for us, his expression a fixed one. โ€œThey like some messed up shit, but they might all have one leader, right? The details on that last part are a little vague for everyone.โ€

Pops grimaces but nods a little, โ€œYouโ€™re mostly correct, except theyโ€™re not a small species. Thereโ€™re more of them than most of the supernatural species on this planet combined, and they do have a leader.โ€ He looks at Dad again before he says, โ€œLincoln Wolf.โ€

โ€œLincoln Wolf?โ€ Josey repeats with a slight chuckle. โ€œWolf? Really? Wolf is the vampire leaderโ€™s last name?โ€

โ€œLincoln is one of the oldest beings on this planet, in this realm,โ€ Pops continues, ignoring Joseyโ€™s comment. โ€œHeโ€™s powerfulโ€” very powerfulโ€” and he has links to the elves.โ€

โ€œThe elves,โ€ Damon is the one who speaks now, and the concern in his voice shows on his face.

We all knew the elves were the strongest of us all, of any known living being. They lived in their own realm, completely separated from the rest of us, and theyโ€™d only changed that once when theyโ€™d come here to dismiss the Great War between humans and werewolves.

They were the reasons humans had no recollection of our species, despite the centuries weโ€™d been so greatly intertwined. Powerful didnโ€™t even begin to describe them.

โ€œYeah, so you get the risk with this guy,โ€ Pops continues with a huff. โ€œLucky for us, he mostly keeps to himself, once you donโ€™t mess with the people he cares about. Itโ€™s a pretty short list: itโ€™s got his life partner, his two closest friends, andโ€ฆโ€ he sighs as he shares the last bit, โ€œthe Amorenias.โ€

โ€œThe Amorenias?โ€ I ask, confused beyond measure.

โ€œWhy the fuck would an old vampire give a damn about them?โ€ Thatโ€™s Josey, and for once in our lives, she seems to be on the same level of ignorance as me.

โ€œAnd how do you know so much about this guy?โ€ Levi asks, eyes narrowed.

โ€œAbout who he cares about?โ€ Damon tacks on.

The old man looks exhausted before heโ€™s even begun to answer our questions, and a little lost too, but Dad saves him. Looking at us for the first time since weโ€™d left the edges of the Amorenia home, he slips that thin mask of indifference over his face, the one he used when he was needed for business, even if his heart was bleeding out beneath it.

โ€œYears ago, when Levi and Damon were just pups, before you two were even born,โ€ he starts, gesturing towards Josey and me, โ€œI sought out a meeting with Lincoln.โ€

My eyes widen, and like my siblings, Iโ€™m left speechless as I stare at my Dad. It didnโ€™t matter that Iโ€™d not known about this Lincoln guy five minutes ago, what Iโ€™d heard of him so far made him sound legendary, and our dad had met him.

โ€œI realised that eventually, this planet would be too small to house all its secret species, and one day, itโ€™ll all come tumbling out and thereโ€™d be some kind of fight for land and resources,โ€ he continues speedily, matter-of-factly. โ€œItโ€™d be long after weโ€™ve died, but you donโ€™t stop caring about your kids or your pack as alpha. So, I decided to try to ally ourselves with a species that would be here through it all.โ€

โ€œThe vampires,โ€ Damon breathes as understanding begins to dawn over us all slowly.

Dad nods, โ€œNot only would they be here, but there same leaders would mostly be here, and it made for the best bet. Thatโ€™s how we met Lincoln, how we know about him. Heโ€™s slowly coming out of the shadows now, which is why the general information about him is so vague, but he is real and like youโ€™re father said, he only cares about a very small handful of people.โ€

โ€œAnd the Amorenias are in that handful?โ€ I supply and Dad nods again. โ€œHow?โ€

โ€œKaterina doesnโ€™t like talking about it much, but before she found us, she lived in a covenโ€ Pops answers tightly, a frown narrowing his features. โ€œThe witches there treated her and her mother horribly, and when they found out how powerful she was, they killed her mother trying to get to her. They captured her, and meant to siphon out all of her magic, but by some blood deal or vow in their family, Lincoln saved her.

โ€œShe was with him only for a short time before she found us, and then she stayed here after we helped her kill what was left of her coven,โ€ he continues, tying in lines to stories that sounded more familiar. โ€œBut she and Lincoln stayedโ€ฆ in touch. They got along pretty well, and then when she had Nikola, they became family.โ€

โ€œFamily?โ€ Levi repeats with a frown. โ€œIf theyโ€™re so close, how have none of us ever heard about this?โ€

โ€œTo protect them,โ€ Pops answers with a shrug. โ€œThe worst way to endanger the people you care about is by letting others know who those people are.โ€

โ€œSo theyโ€™ve all kept this a secret for years?โ€ Damon asks with wide eyes. โ€œNik sometimes mentioned this Appa person. Sounded like a grand-dad, but with the fact that their whole bloodline is dead, I always thought he was talking to a dead ancestor or something.โ€

โ€œHe was talking about this Lincoln person, and he trusts him enough that thatโ€™s where they probably are,โ€ I state, ignoring the ache that starts in my chest at the rove of mistrust Nikola had been harbouring for years by keeping this secret. โ€œOkay. Where is he? How do I find him?โ€

I expect my parents to tell me, to give me something, but instead, they stare at me with pleading eyes.

โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œHagen, Lincoln loves Nikola,โ€ Dad says plainly, his gaze on me imploring. โ€œHe loves him like his own. They have a very close bond, and if Nikola is as hurt as you are from this whole ordeal, then Lincoln will not show you mercy if you show up on his front step.โ€

Fear rattles through me, driven by the unease in Dadโ€™s tone, but I couldnโ€™t let it stop me. โ€œIโ€™ll get through him.โ€

โ€œHeโ€™s eons old, living in an underground castle with an army of hundreds of thousands at his beck and call. There is no โ€˜getting throughโ€™, Hagen,โ€ he snaps.

โ€œIโ€™ll find a way!โ€ I shout back. โ€œIโ€™ll find a way because I have to. N-Nikola would do the same for me.โ€

There could be a legion against him, and Nikola would take them all on to get to me, or he wouldโ€™ve. Iโ€™d be damned if now I didnโ€™t do the same.

โ€œHow do I find him?โ€

โ€œHagenโ€”โ€

โ€œNo!โ€ I shout and in my voice, thereโ€™s a conviction that Iโ€™ve never heard before, one that brings the room to a hushed quiet. โ€œIโ€™m done fucking around! Iโ€™ve wasted months already, I canโ€™t waste any more time! Iโ€™m going to find him. Iโ€™m leaving, no matter what you say, so just tell me where my mate is or I swear to Goddessโ€ฆ I will spend the rest of my life hating you if you donโ€™t. Soโ€”โ€ I take a much-needed breath and use the last shred of my patience to ask, โ€œWhere? Is. He?โ€

Itโ€™s a question, but its answer is not one up for debate.

One way or another, Iโ€™d find this castle and Iโ€™d fight my way through to get to Nikola, or Iโ€™d die trying, and then at least heโ€™d know that I fought just as hard as he always had for us.
