“A pet?”

I nod, chuckling just a bit as I rub my eyelids. I was always tired, but right now, I was fighting tooth and nail not to fall asleep right here. I couldn’t remember ever being this exhausted.

“You want to get a pet for Nikola?” This time, Lincoln says it slower, as if that would somehow change my answer.

“Dr Otu said she thinks it can be good for him,” I explain as my brows meet as I try to recall the exact words she used. “He’s been struggling recently– struggling more, with his magic and everything,” I sigh as the weight of the past few months settle on my shoulders. “She thinks a conduit can help bottle some of his magic while he learns to live with it, and she also thinks it just might help him communicate vocally.”
