Jacob’s POV
Colson stares out at the sea, his gaze as distant as the horizon. I clutch his hand tighter, but his stare never wavers.
It’s empty— lost, and it breaks my heart in an entirely new way.
“We’ll find him,” I whisper, voice small but no less true.
I didn’t know how. I didn’t even know where to start, but I knew that somehow, someway, we would find him and make it right.
We had to because it was the only possible option.
There was no us without Zhoron, and I wouldn’t survive in a world where he thought we’d betrayed him and I never saw him again.
“He will,” I promise, but Colson remains silent, eyes fixed ahead, and the cracks in my heart worsen.
He’s spiralling. Colson, who always knows what to do, who was always so calm and collected, even in the scariest of times. He’s spiralling, and I have no idea how to stop it or make him feel better.
I don’t even know where to start when he was in so much pain.
We both lost him, but Zhoron had only just started opening up to him. I had time with Zhoron, enough that there had been some trust there I had to earn back when Colson found us, but Colson’s battle had been much harder.
He’d been facing the most mistrustful version of our linker, and he’d only just come over the hill when…
“He wasn’t angry,” he suddenly mumbles, voice lost as he stares out at the lulling waters as though he might glimpse Zhoron on them. “…When he realised what was happening, he wasn’t angry.”
I swallow, but my throat squeezes until the pain there rivals the one in my chest.
“He thinks we lied to him or tricked him, and he wasn’t angry,” he repeats, voice breaking as he finally looks at me, eyes glistening. “He was hurt.”
I shake my head as my lips tremble, wanting him to stop, but there’s nothing that can stop the flood of memories or the misery that follows it. It coats the chains of our link, thickening over it until its weight is almost unbearable.
“W-We will find him,” I say again. It’s all I have. All that stops me from breaking all over again. “We will, a-and we’ll fix it. We’ll make it better, and everything will go back to the way it was.”
Colson gazes at me, eyes empty for a scary moment before a flicker of hope kindles within them. It’s barely there, but it’s there, and he clings to it.
Swallowing, he nods and pulls me to him to press his lips to the top of my head before he whispers the one thing that keeps my head above the surface.
“We’ll find him.”
