William’s P.O.V
I look into the mirror with a small frown as I try to style my hair. It was never an easy task for me, in fact, a few months ago getting ready was one of the most miserable parts of my day.
But now, it didn’t upset me nearly as much.
It wasn’t as if my eyesight had improved in any way to make my routine easier, it was still as shitty and useless as always. I still saw my features in a blur that made nothing distinctive beside my bright eyes and my teeth when I smiled, which was rare when I had to face my mirror.
Nothing had changed, except the fact that I had the most amazing, loving man to call my own.
Life was just better with Damon, things that were once so monumental now so insignificant with him by myself. I couldn’t find it in myself to hate myself for the little things anymore, or the world around me for causing them, not when the perfect man for me was always only a few steps away.
It happened subtly and before I even knew it, my eyesight, or lack of it, was something I lived with now, instead of something I detested with every breath.
Damon was the light I needed to see that things weren’t all over for me in this world, there were still things to enjoy and others worth to enjoy. After all, he came from an entirely new world that I never had a clue about, so even if I wanted to believe mine was over, he offered me a new one.
He was my happiness, but he was also my light.
“Blue wants to speak to you,” Damon’s voice calls from my phone, the ringtone he’d made making me smile as I rush from our bathroom to find the mobile. “Blue, the guy you worked for, he’s calling you right now. I think you should answer it Till. Blue wants to speak to you. Blue, the guy you worked for,”
Rushing into the living room, I find Damon standing with the phone in his hand, holding it out for me with what could only be a smile. I knew how badly he wanted to make one of my special ringtones and seeing how happy it made him, I was glad that I let him.
I take the phone from him and press a grateful kiss to his cheek before I answer the call.
“Hey Blue,” I answer as I slip my fingers into Damon’s hand to see him.
As always that pressing weight on my chest lightens as my blotches vision clears to make room for the clear picture of my boyfriend. Damon was, in fact, smiling at me, though it was small and hesitant as he gestured with his head at the phone, asking if I wanted privacy.
He always asked. In almost all things he always asked first, never assumed… it was one of the things I loved most about him.
“Hey Will, I’m just calling in to check in on you,” Blue says into the phone just as I shake my head and tighten my grasp on Damon’s hand, I wanted him to stay. “I haven’t heard from you in a bit and wanted to make sure you’re all good.”
“Oh I’m fine,” I reply just as I watch surprise flood Damon’s features before he offers me a smile that said just how much this, me letting him in a bit more, meant to him. “Sorry I didn’t call, things have been a little… crazy here.”
“That young man isn’t giving you any trouble is he?” Blue asks immediately going on the defensive, “I’ll call the cops if you tell me to.”
I laugh as Damon’s smile immediately evaporates and is instantly replaced with a displeased frown as he glares at the phone as if it was Blue himself. Blue had never quite forgiven Damon when we had our falling out, he still chased him from the shop when he’d come to get me after work.
“He’s been doing just fine,” I reply through my laughter as I pull Damon in for a hug, “better than fine, he’s been damn near perfect.”
“That sounds like a reply you give when you want something and your partner is close by,” Blue grumbles tiredly making me chuckle, “God knows Madeline’s been pulling that trick for years.”
(A.N. YES, I know I’ve changed this woman’s name multiple times. I know, lmfaooo. You should all know I’m shit with the little things like this by now, I still don’t know the actual name of the pack or the what the two were called before they merged in Alpha Mates. LOL. She was Madeline, nicknamed Maddie then she was Nancy and now she’s Madeline again. I don’t know what to tell you beside sorry.)
“You watch that tongue Blue,” A kind voice calls from the other side of the phone making me smile.
I’d met Blue’s wife a few times and she was lovely each time, a kind woman that loved her husband no matter how sour he could be. But in truth, he was never like that with Madeline, he always smiled with her.
“How’s the shop?” I ask as Damon pulls away to sit down on the couch before he takes me down with him. I settle in his lap and he holds me easily with one hand while he picks up the book he was reading this week with the other and begins to scan the pages.
“It’s doing good, I got two new employees actually,” He says, his voice going a little lighter, “The work’s been getting too heavy and after you left, I couldn’t do it all on my own. I put up an ad and wouldn’t you know, two new workers.”
“I’m happy you’ve gotten some help, though I must admit Blue… I’m not too happy to hear I’ve been replaced,” I tease and he chuckles from his end.
“It took two to replace you, Will,” He replies fondly, “and even so, you’re still the best employee I’ve ever had.”
His words coated over my heart like a warm blanket that made my chest expand with joy as I smiled against the phone. I knew his words were just to entertain my teasing but it still made me happy to just talk to Blue, someone I knew genuinely wanted the best for me.
Blue had been nothing but sweet from the moment I met him and an even better boss, he respected my wishes always and never touched me but at this moment, I just wanted to hug him. “Thanks, Blue.”
“Of course,” He replies before he clears his throat, “Madeline’s giving me that look to put my phone down, we’re having breakfast and she gets mad when I use it at the table.”
“I won’t keep you then,” I reply on a chuckle, “Tell her I say hi and I’ll tell Sassy you miss her.”
“I do,” He groans sadly, he and Sassy did always get on well, “Bye Will, you call me soon and take care of yourself.”
“You too Blue,” With that, we end the call and I smile at the screen before I turn off my phone, dropping it on the couch to lean into Damon’s chest. He hums gently as I wrap my arms around his neck and cuddle into his neck.
I wasn’t sure why, but these days I’d been feeling extra cuddly with Damon and a little needy.
I just wanted to be around him all the time, even when we were just in the suite. If he was in the kitchen, I’d jump on his back and he’d let me hang on while he made whatever he came in there for and if he was reading, I’d just lay with him.
Damon thought it could be the beginning of something he called a ‘heat’ while Theo thought it was the need to complete the mating bond. Whichever it was, both apparently meant sex so I wasn’t too worried.
“How are you feeling today?” I ask against his neck as Damon pulls me in closer to him.
“Good,” He replies simply as his eyes continue to scan the sentences on the pages of his book. “I went for a jog with Sassy this morning and got some more clothes from the house.”
“Did you run into anyone?” I ask carefully, not wanting to trigger a memory if it was a bad one.
“Yes, I talked to Dad for a bit, nothing heavy,” He says sounding light like his words suggested, “We caught up for a little, it was nice.”
“That’s good,” I say as I press a kiss to his neck.
This situation with Damon and his family was such a fragile one, but it was improving slowly with the distance they’d allowed one another. Damon was relaxing little by little with me as he did when we were living in our apartments, and smiling a bit more each day.
He started doing online classes to catch up with all the schoolwork he missed in his last year when he left which I thought was awesome. It was his way of keeping his mind busy, he was a little antsy without being able to do the things he said an alpha should be doing.
I was trying to push him to slowly try to get involved in those kinds of things, but he tensed up every time so I knew it was one of those things that only he could do.
But I was pretty sure that what I had planned for us today, would help him get there.
“Damon,” I say suddenly and pull away from my corner in his neck to look at him.
“Yeah,” He replies as he looks away from his book to give me his attention.
“You broke a promise to me,” I say seriously making his eyebrows immediately pull together as confusion contorts his features.
“A promise?” He questions and when I nod his frown only deepens. “What promise?”
“Seriously Damon, you can’t even remember?” I question using my non-existent performing arts diploma to seem hurt and disappointed.
It was proving to be worth every dime.
Damon shuts his book and sets it down, not bothering to mark the page as he rests his now free hand on my thigh and studies me worriedly. I swallow under the weight of his gaze as my body tingles with pleasure.
It was impossible to forget how handsome Damon was, but sometimes it just snuck up on me and hit me all at once. Over the months, he seemed to grow into his features, kind of personality-wise, now he wasn’t only undeniably sexy but irresistible too.
I really hit the damn jackpot.
“Wait, are you messing with me?” He questions carefully while he narrows his eyes suspiciously.
“Do I look like if my name is Taylor?” I ask and he snorts suddenly, “Or Alexander? I assure you it’s William, I’m not lying.”
“Well your heart rate isn’t spiking,” Damon confirms as he lets his doubt fall away, “I don’t know what you’re talking about Will,” Damon admits after a moment of thinking on it, his blue eyes sparkling with remorse.
“Really?” I ask and he nods slowly. “So you’re telling me you don’t remember promising to make me a set of knives to match yours?”
As understanding seeps in, the concern in his eyes fades away and is quickly replaced by amusement as he swipes his thumb over my skin in a soothing motion that made me want to melt into him and never move.
“How could I possibly forget?” Damon questions sarcastically and I nod my agreement. “I’m a horrible mate.”
“That absolute worse,” I confirm and he snorts again, the sound like everything he did, making my heart flutter merrily. “I think it’s only fair that you rectify this situation, immediately.”
“Right now?” He asks, giving me a look that said he’d rather keep reading.
Dropping the acting, I let my shoulders sag as I rest my hands on his chest, letting my fingers feel the steady thump of his heart behind his chest. When my eyes meet his eyes again, I try to let my concern for him fall back a bit, I didn’t want him to think I was pitying him because I wasn’t.
I was just a bit worried about him.
The way he spoke of this pack, the people in it and his future role for it, told me in exquisite detail how much he loved every square inch of it. We couldn’t stay cooped up in this suite forever, it’d take an eternity for him to reach where he wanted to be if we did.
He needed to get the ball rolling and I couldn’t think of a better way than getting him to do something he loved.
“You said you made your knives yourself,” I start and he nods quickly, “You love them, I know how much they mean to you and you’ve barely touched one since we’ve been back.”
“I…” Damon’s words fall away as he realises that my words were true.
“In the apartment, you used to play with them sometimes, just have them in your hands, you said they calmed you.” I remind him and he raises his fractured blue eyes to mine. “If just having them helps, I bet making them is even better.
“It is,” He admits after a few silent minutes.
“Then let’s go make a knife,” I say and he laughs gently making a grin pull at my lips at the sound, “it doesn’t have to be one for me, I was just joking about that. But I want to go to wherever you make your knives and watch you make one, and I’ll even play assistant if you want.”
“Assistant,” Damon repeats with a smirk as he shifts me until I was straddling him, he rests his hands on my thighs as he looks up at me with slightly, happier eyes than when we woke up this morning. “I think you’d be more of a distraction if you help out.”
“If that’s the case, then I’ll stay away and watch from afar,” I promise as I lean forward to bring us even closer together, “I don’t want you losing a finger or two.”
“Of course you don’t,” He pokes and it’s my turn to snort now at his version of flirting that almost made me laugh instead of turning me on.
“So what do you say,” I ask hopefully as I look at my mate, hoping he’d say yes.
Damon stares at me with love in his eyes that burned me to my core, crippling me until I was pliant to him in every imaginable way and happy about it. He raises one hand to my face and caresses my cheek with careful fingers. I lean into the touch and let my eyes close as I soak in his touch, warmth and love, not wanting to waste a single moment with him.
Soft lips meet mine and I can’t help but moan at the rush of emotions that flood my soul at the connection. I press my lips to his and kiss him with as much passion and love as he pours into me, our lips move in a familiar, tempting manner that sends electricity sparking through my veins.
“I say,” Damon says against my lips, “I’d love to make a knife with you.”
—————
I stand behind Damon as he walks towards the large door that blocked the entrance of the small building he’d brought us to, his fingers searching through the handle of keys in his hand for the right one.
Looking around curiously, I note that there weren’t any other buildings or homes nearby or other pack members walking by. For one there was no road and Damon had brought us pretty far out into his pack lands, further away from his home than we had been so far.
I had a feeling that not many people knew what this was.
“I haven’t been here in months, even a little before I left so it’s probably dusty,” Damon warns as he slips the key into the large padlock and takes it out of the loop. He walks back with a hand on the door handle and pulls the large, metal door back along its track.
Sunlight spills into every crevice and corner of the large, floor space while Damon continues to walk the door back until it met its limit. He offers his hand and I step in quickly to take it as he leads me into what could only be described as a workshop.
It was one flat level with a high rooftop and only a few windows to offer some more light, but with the entryway wide open there was no need for lights, at least not at this time.
Different forms of machinery I had no clue about lined the walls and filled in the other spaces, it was sort of chaotic on first glance but the more I looked around the more I realised that everything seemed to have its own place or section.
It was like organised chaos, kinda.
“I can take you through, tell you what everything is and what it’s for,” Damon offers as he walks me through the open floorplan, my eyes scan the many tables full of knives of different variations that I guessed were incomplete.
Even with all this sunlight, I couldn’t see in much detail beyond the general shape or colour of them, much like with the machinery.
“I don’t mind if you want to,” I say honestly as I look back to Damon, his nervous eyes making me falter for a moment. “What’s wrong?”
“Nothing,” He answers quickly but I could tell that that wasn’t the truth.
As I stare at Damon he releases a long breath a slouches a little as he lets go of my hand and moves away as if trying to escape my gaze. I don’t follow, giving him the space he wanted while he caught up to his thoughts and emotions.
Damon runs his fingers along the edges of what looked to me to be a gigantic brick but I didn’t quite trust my vision to be sure of that. “I’ve never brought anyone here before,” Damon reveals suddenly, his words taking me by surprise.
I knew Damon didn’t share as much with his family with me, but this place felt like his home did when we went in, somewhere safe and lived in. It was clearly important to Damon, and from the times I’d spent with his family, I couldn’t imagine them never coming here.
“They know about it,” He fills in quickly as if sensing my confusion, “Dad actually had it built for me so it’s not like I’m trying to hide it or anything, and they’ve asked to come inside before I just never said yes…”
“Why not?”
“I don’t know. I just never felt like I should, or could I guess.” He answers, his tone full of so much frustration I knew this wasn’t something he wanted to or was prepared to talk about.
“Okay,” I say calmly and smile when he finally looks at me again, I didn’t want this to make things worse for him. I still wanted this to end as a good day, a step in the right direction. “Are you nervous about finally having someone inside?” I ask and add on the extra words I knew would make him smile when he doesn’t reply immediately. “Well, someone other than Blaze.”
Damon smiles, a line of white revealing itself on his blurred face where he stood.
“Blaze is always judging so it’s not that intimidating to bring him here,” He replies, his voice not sounding quite as strained anymore. “It’s harder with you.”
“Because I’m your mate or because I’m awesome?” I ask and he laughs this time.
“A bit of both,”
“Then I’ll say you have nothing to worry about or be intimidated for,” I say as I make my way over to him until I was standing right in front of him but I don’t touch him, sensing how skittish he seemed to be now. “Everything you’ve told me so far, I’ve listened to and accepted, just as I accept you. I love you in all things, especially the things that make you happy so don’t be scared to show me what makes you happy.”
I hated that I couldn’t see his expression clearly now, even being this close but this was one of those rare moments where Damon had to come to me and not the other way around. So I wait, fisting my hands at my sides to keep them there until Damon comes to me.
It takes a few minutes, silent long and strenuous minutes of waiting until he takes my hand in his and presses a kiss to my knuckles. “Thank you, Will,” He says once he lowers them and my entire body buzzes to life as if it was reawoken somehow.
“Always,” I promise before I look around at all the equipment. “Alright, why don’t you get to work and I’ll lean against a wall or something.”
“There’s a couch, near the back,” Damon says as he leads me in that direction and settles me on the old sofa that was admittedly really fucking comfortable. “You know this isn’t going to be done in one day right?”
“How long does it take to make a knife?”
“I usually spread it across a couple of days, but in total its usually more than twenty-four hours for me,” He says with a shrug as if he didn’t just say a day. “It depends on the model, design, size, it differs.”
“Okay,” I agree as I force away any thoughts of going home, I wanted to be here with Damon for this, however long it took. “How about you just go with the flow of things? Stop when you feel like it and don’t worry about me while you’re working. I’ve got my phone, you packed me food, and I’ve got a place to sleep – I’m all set.”
“Hermit,” He accuses before he presses a kiss to my head and walks away.
“You’re in love with this hermit so I see that more as an insult to you,” I call out behind him but he ignores me.
I curl myself up into a ball as I watch Damon as best as I could from my position and with what my eyes decided to show me. He cleaned up first, wiping down surfaces and getting things in order as he puts away some materials in favour of others.
When that was all done, he pulled out a stereo and connected it before giving me his phone. “You asked me before what music I was into, and I dodged the question so I wouldn’t give away that I listen to music from supernatural artists only,” Damon explains as he leaves me to scroll through literally hundreds of songs I’d never heard of, not that I could read them anyway.
“There’s supernatural artists that like…produce music for everyone but humans?” I question in surprise as I press a random track to play.
“Weird way of wording it but yeah, I guess,” Damon calls as he takes lays out two panels of what looked like steel on a now, clear table.
“And you’re telling me this now?” I exclaim as a new arrangement of instruments and vocals higher than I’d ever heard them came through the speaker. “I’m obsessed with music, I listen to new records all the time and I worked in a music shop the whole time we were getting to know each other. And you’re now choosing to share with me that there’s an entire world full of music I’ve never heard of out there?”
“Yeah,” Damon replies nonchalantly as if this wasn’t a major violation.
“Damon!” I exclaim and he looks up from the panels he was measuring to face me. “This is insane!”
“Yeah that’s how I felt when I first listened to this,” Damon continues, what I was trying to say completely going over his head. “This song blew up a couple years back because it was the first time someone got a siren on a track without them trying to like kill everyone.”
“A s-siren,” I repeat and he nods before returning to his measuring.
“Crazy fucking stuff,” Damon says mindlessly as picks up the panels and walks them a relatively small machine which he uses to fasten the steel in place. “I let everyone else listen to it first, waited a couple of weeks for some effects before I gave it a shot.”
“Obviously,” I reply sarcastically.
“Josey thought I was being stupid,” He replies, not yet picking up on my teasing while he picked up what I recognised to be a grinder when he turned it on and pressed it to the steel. “But if it was all a trick, she’d be the one dead not me.”
I listen contentedly, as Damon continues talking about things of this supernatural world he lived in all his life, one that only seemed to grow bigger and bigger in my mind as he carried on. Each song that played had a story attached, one that he didn’t mind sharing the deeper he got into the grove of things.
I couldn’t see it, but I could feel him sinking into doing what he loved, falling into a process I’m sure he knew like the back of his hand. His joy sept into my veins as if we were connected, it was something truly blissful that I couldn’t put into words but felt throughout my entire body.
It was peace and it was perfect.
———–
For the next four days, Damon and I made the time to come to his workshop at some point in the day.
I would watch Damon as best as I could and try not to drool as I watched sparks fly or him hammering away at the beginnings of the knife and Damon would let himself go, enjoying every moment of this craft of his.
There were a lot of moving parts and Damon knew them all, mastered them all.
Damon had told me in detail the different tools he used and what they were for, but I couldn’t remember much but the Belt Grinder and the Forge which he used to heat things up. Every time something came out of that thing, it’d be bright yellow and orange, and it looked like it was one second away from melting.
Then the banging would start. There was a lot of banging.
But with the music playing and my mate in sight, the banging became background noise I didn’t mind too much. I even managed to sleep through it as I was now, that was until a certain someone started to shake me awake.
“I’m up,” I groan as I open my eyes and roll over to face Damon, “I’m upppppp! Stop shaking me!”
When I open my eyes my aggravation immediately evaporates at the sight of Damon’s massive grin and glowing blue eyes that were a testament to his excitement. He was squat beside the couch so he was at eye level, yet his body wasn’t anywhere near to still with the way he practically vibrated in his spot.
“It’s done,” He says before I could ask him what made him so happy.
The two words were all it took for me to sit up as my own heart started hammering with anticipation. Even though I didn’t play a single role in the making of this knife, I felt as if it was my baby as well since I was here the entire time Damon made it and I couldn’t help but share his excitement now, wanting nothing more than to see the finished product.
“Where is it?” I ask as I stand to my feet and help him up in a hurry.
Damon doesn’t say a word as he pulls me to the table close to the entrance that housed many other knives of different sizes and shapes. But the one Damon finished today sat in a space of its own, as if waiting to be worshipped.
“Tell me what you think of it,” Damon says as I release his fingers to pick up the blade, “and be honest.”
It was heavier than I expected and smaller than all the other knives Damon had shown me from his favourites. The knife itself didn’t look like steel when I brought it close to my face, it had a black wave-like pattern that covered most of the knife blade. It was sharp, like scary sharp and smooth to the touch, there wasn’t a single bump or dip in the edges.
The handle was the same shade as the blade but didn’t have that wavy print, this looked like wood but I knew it wasn’t by the texture, it was too smooth to be wood. I didn’t know what it was but it didn’t matter because the knife was perfect in every way.
I smile to myself as I recall the way I’d first thought of Damon’s love for knives, as something different and strange, but came to accept it the more I came to understand just how much they meant to him. Now here I was, holding a knife and seeing it as beautiful, something I would’ve never imagined a few months back.
But that was the only word that fit the bill as I stared at the blade in my hands that was crafted with nothing but love and care, driven by passion.
“You haven’t said a word,” Damon comments reminding me that he was awaiting a critique.
I put the knife down before I turn to face him, resting my hand on his shoulder to see his face before I uttered the only response I could, “It’s beautiful Damon.”
I didn’t think it was possible to see Damon look happier than he did when he was showing me his collection for the first time, when he was as enthusiastic as a puppy and so lost in his love for it that he didn’t realise he’d emptied the entire bag on my lap.
But now, as Damon looked at me with the biggest smile I’d ever seen from him, I knew that this was where he was his happiest.
“I-It’s yours,” He says through a stutter, his excitement getting the best of him.
Fuck he could be so cute some times.
“I was just teasing you when I said you broke a promise,” I assure him quickly, I didn’t want him to feel like he had to give this to me.
“I know, but I want you to have it,” He insists as he looks down at the knife before looking back at me. “The type is a Damascus Knife. It was the first I ever got done right, well the first complex, knife I made that I was proud of. It’s on the wall in my room and though it’s not a favourite, I want your first from me to be the first I made for myself.”
“I like that,” I tell him as I press up on my toes to wrap my arms around his neck to bring him to me, but instead he lifts me up making me laugh as I circle his waist with my legs. “I’m going to take it everywhere with me and if anyone ever asks, I’ll tell them my amazing, talented, handsome, awesome and loving boyfriend made it for me.”
The words were meant to make him smile and they did, but they also made his eyes full up with tears he refused to let fall as he quickly blinked them away instead. I don’t comment on it, knowing he wouldn’t want me to and instead continue to smile at him as he quickly brings himself around.
It was overwhelming for him, to think that someone wouldn’t be afraid to love this thing he loved so much, openly and unashamed. But it was exactly what I planned to do so that one day he could too.
“You’re my happiness Damon,” I tell him as he closes his eyes to cage in the tears, but one slips anyway. I lean forward to press my head to his as he releases raged breathes, his heart racing against my chest as he held me tighter. “All of you, I love all of you.”
“I love you too Will,” Damon replies, his voice cracking slightly at the ends. “Thanks for…. everything.”
Damon, thank you for giving me your everything.
