Nikola’s heart beats with mine, his breaths deep and long, following everything my body did until he naturally relaxed. It was easy for him when he was seated between my legs, his back pressed against my chest and his head tucked under my neck.

At twelve, Nik had long grown out of his cuddly, ‘I love to hug my parents’ phase, but with his shift so close, the clinginess had returned.

“What was your first shift like?”

“My first shift,” I think on it while I pass my hand over his head, “pretty average I guess. Before I turned twelve, I was put on the usual meds and then a few days after my birthday, I shifted.”

“But what was the shift like?” Nik asks insistently, “what did it feel like?”
